Similarities between the League of Nations and United Nations and why the LN disbanded.
Both aimed to keep peace and prevent conflict but the League of Nations disbanded after failing to prevent WWII
General Assembly
The body where every member is represented and they all vote on questions such as security, peace, their budget, and the admission of new members
The Security Council
Body responsible for using force against countries accused of violating UN principles. Permanent members are Russia, China, Britain, France, and the US
Secretariat
One secretary is chosen by the Security Council from a small, neutral nation to lead and influence the whole organization
The International Court of Justice
Body responsible for settling disputes over international law between member countries but has no power to enforce decisions
Trustee Council
Oversees the governments of trust territories like Israel and helps them become independent and self govern
Basic Freedoms (4-9) Promised by the Declaration of Human Rights
The right to a nationality, to own property, to rest and enjoy a paid holiday, equality before the law and for children born within and outside of marriage, freedom from slavery/torture and of expression and the right to adequate food, water, shelter, clothes, healthcare, and education
Ways (2) the UN’s peace keeping missions have changed since the 1990s
The number of troops has increased while the number of missions has decreased so that the UN can focus and respond quicker to the problems that matter the most
Mission of the World Food Program
To provide food aid for poorer countries and those affected by natural disasters and political unrest
Mission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
To preserve cultural/environmental sites in addition to promoting education and expanding free education
Mission of the Humans Rights Watch
To keep watch for violations of human rights defined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Global Goals of the UN
To get rid of poverty and hunger, achieve gender equality, clean water, and sanitation for all, and to fight climate change
Similarity and Difference between the World Bank and International Monetary Fund
Both provide loans to help stabalize countries but they differ in their criticisms. The World Bank is criticized for not caring about how their loans to help countries build their infrastructures destroys the land while the IMF is criticized for not taking into account each country’s needs when it comes to their loan conditions
Mission of Protecting Refugees
To protect those who flee the country in times of war, famine, and natural disasters
The Economic and Social Council
Directs economic, social, humanitarian, and cultural activities
