Unit 9.2 - Technological Advancements and Limitations - Disease Flashcards
“Even when cures exist, some diseases persist because the conditions of _____ are contributing factors.”
poverty
What factors in a low-income country contribute to the spread of disease?
Unclean water, a lack of access to healthcare, and poor housing/working conditions
Why Malaria is associated with poverty
A parasitic disease spread by mosquitoes in tropical areas, it is associated with poverty because it has killed hundreds of thousands of people, most of those being African children which may be a result of living in hard-to-reach places because of the economic state and location of their countries
Why Tuberculosis is associated with poverty
An airborne disease spread through coughing and sneezing into the lungs, poor housing and working conditions in low-income countries means people may be more crowded together and so it is easier for this disease to spread to mass amounts of people
Why Cholera and Polio are associated with poverty
Disease spread through unclean water, since low-income countries deal with having contaminated water, it is easier for these diseases to spread in low income countries
Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin
Researches who found a vaccine for Polio, Jonas an injectable one and Albert an oral one
Factors that make spreading the vaccine difficult
Political unrest and religious fundamentalism make people wary of accepting outside help
How vaccines united the world
With organizations like the World Health Organisation and Doctors Without Borders working together to find vaccines, it did not matter where these people were from and so global efforts were able to solve global problems
Why HIV/AIDS is associated with poverty
Diseases that weaken the immune system and are spread through the exchange of bodily fluids, antiretroviral drugs were created to suppress these symptoms (but couldn’t cure them) however it was so expensive it was hard to distribute to low-income countries
Diseases (3) that had dramatic impacts on human populations and their symptoms
The 1918 flu, Polio (paralysis and death), and Ebola, spread through the infected fluids of humans and animals (bleeding, organ failure, and death)
Diseases (2) associated with longevity
Heart disease and Alzheimer’s
What explains the differences in the trending diseases in low-income countries and medium to high-income countries?
While in low-income countries people deal with contaminated water, poor living conditions, and don’t have access to healthcare, those in medium to high-income countries do and so deal more with diseases associated with longevity because they are able to live longer thanks to their cleaner living conditions and access to healthcare.
