Neurosis
Avoidance of fear; a way we deal with fear/anxiety
Phobia
Unwarranted fear of a relatively harmless stimulus
Obsessive
Repetitive thought
Compulsive
Repetitive act
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Unwanted repetitive thoughts followed by unwanted repetitive rituals
Anxiety
Anxiety causes fear that causes Neurosis
Common OCD rituals:
- Cleaning or washing rituals
Excessive hand washing, showering, bathing, toothbrushing, or grooming, cleaning household items, and avoiding contaminants
Common OCD rituals:
- checking rituals
Often involve doors, locks and appliances, and assuring that nothing bad has happened
Common OCD rituals:
- repeating behaviors
Putting clothes on and off, going to and fro through a door, touching certain objects a certain amount of times; may also include sequencing
Common OCD rituals:
- placing
Putting things in a certain position or order which decreases discomfort. Often includes balancing
Common OCD rituals:
- hoarding
Is done so that nothing of value will be lost. It is generally acquiring and failing to discard large #s of items that would appear to have little to no value to others
Common OCD rituals:
- seeking reassurance
Gives comfort by assuring that events have or haven’t occurred, or that relationships are strong or that a person is loved. Is a common ritual that often involves others unwittingly
Common OCD rituals:
- counting
Includes counting that relates to objects, time, sequence or events
Depression
Feeling of sadness, low energy, loneliness, apathy, pessimism
Idiosyncratic Neurosis
Personal neurotic tendency
3 Anxiety Disorders
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Panic attack
- Social Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Characterized by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worry, exaggerated anxiety about everyday life events
Panic attack
Comes without warning, marked by heart palpitation and tunnel vision
Social Anxiety Disorder
Excessive and unreasonable fear of social situations, included agoraphobia (fear of being out in the open)
Schizoid (schizoid type personality)
Split from society and other people; withdrawn
2 Somatoform Disorders
- Hypochondria
2. Conversion Disorder
Hypochondria
Strong unjustified fear of being ill
Conversion Disorder
Person believes they have a severe physical disorder such as blindness, paralysis, deafness, etc.
Psychosis
Loss of contact with reality
