Unit 9 Flashcards
Lymphatic System - Functional System
Lymph tissue and Lymphoid organs found throughout the body
Lymphoid Tissue
Connective Tissue - - In the lining of body cavities-In body organs: digestive, respiratory, urinary
Lymphoid Organs
Encapsulated (Fibrous Connective) –Lymph Nodes-Spleen-Thymus-Tonsils
Lymphatic Vessels and Flow
Lymphatic Capillaries are all fed by:-Lymphatic Vessels-Lymphatic Trunks-Lymphatic Ducts
Lymphatic Vessels - Function
TRANSPORT about 3 LITERS of lymph fluid from tissues back to bloodstream every 24 hours.PROTECT and DEFENDS body against disease. (producing white blood cells and phagocytes; housing AGRANULAR leukocytes)
Components of Lymph Fluid
Proteins, fats, and fat soluble vitamins (D,A,K,E) transported from digestive tract to blood
Common signs & symptoms of Lymphatic Disease
NAME?
Lymphadenopathy
SWELLING or ENLARGEMENT of one or more lymph nodes
Generalized Lymphadenopathy and causes
MULTIPLE lymph nodes are diseased.Caused by-Leukemia-metastic tumor-infections (TB, Fungal)-mononucleosis
Lymphadenopathy Causes - Localized Axillary
NAME?
Lymphadenopathy Causes - Localized Cervical (neck)
NAME?
Lymphadenopathy Causes - Localized Inguinal
NAME?
Lymphadenitis
PHYSIOLOGICAL INFLAMMATION of the Lymph nodes.Specific Infections grow in lymph nodes–TB, Syphilis, Typhoid Fever(Salmonella), Tularemia (Rabbit Fever), or infection of the gall bladder or appendix
Lymphangitis
INFECTION of Lymph Vessels.Common complication of a bacterial infection-acute strep, staph infection of the skin
Lymphangitis - Symptoms
NAME?
Tonsillitis
Inflammation of the tonsils (sore throat)-Tonsils are lymph nodes in back of the mouth and nose, they filter out bacteria and infectious microorganisms
Tonsillitis Symptoms
-Difficulty swallowing-Sore Throat lasting longer than 48 hours-Tenderness of the jaw and throat-Voice change, loss of voice-Ear pain-Fever, Chills-Headaches
Lymphatic Neoplasms
Most are MALIGNANT, called Lymphomas or Lymphosarcoma. Most common are Hodgkins Lymphoma and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma - Cause
-virus or genetic predisposition-age 24 - 40, most common in males-specific cancer cells (REED STERNBERG CELLS, B-Lymphocytes)
Hodgkins Lymphoma Symptoms
NAME?
Hodgkins Lymphoma outcome
-Cancerous lymph nodes or tissues becoming hard and calcified ->spreads to lung, spleen and lining of intestine-some disfigurement-20% mortality rate-life expectancy is 2 - 10 years
Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
-Spreads faster than Hodgkins due to immunosuppressive meds.-B and T Lymphocytes-Age 40 - 55, more males-25% 5 year survival rate-spreads to lungs, breast and stomach
Spleen
Lymphatic Organ-removes bloodborne antigens-removal and destruction of aged or defective blood cells
Splenomegaly cause and symptoms
Enlargement of the spleen-Caused by trauma or injury to ribs or abdomen on left side, infection (Mononucleosis, salmonella, virus), neoplasms (leukemia)-Symptoms are tenderness, pain, discomfort and ANEMIA.-Danger of rupturing or hemorrhaging of the spleen
