A

Define: Cultural Revolution

A

Movement led by Mao’s Red Guards in China from 1966 to 1968. Peasants = heros. Intellectuals dangerouse and needed to purify through hard labor. Colleges and universities closed. Chaos.

A

British Foreign Scty declaration in 1917 that they favored creation of an Israeli state in Palestine while protecting the “rights of existing non-Jewish communities.” Efforts to create a Jewish state failed, however.

A

1993 agreement signed by Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian Liberation Organization Chairman Yasir Arafat. Gave Palestinians self-rule in Gaza Strip and West Bank.

Define: intifada

A

“uprising” – Palestinian disobedience begun in 1987 (boycotts, demonstrations, attacks on Israeli soldiers and rock throwing by unarmed teens). Put world pressure on Israel to negotiate with Palestinians, which began in late 1991.

A

The United Nations after WWII. Palestine was partitioned into a Palestinian State and a Jewish State. Jerusalem to be an international city owned by neither side.
