Starts in upper right and goes counter clockwise
Names for The Grid
Coordinate Grid
Coordinate Plane
Cartesian Plane
Coordinate System
Quadrant with both positive values
QI
Quadrant with a negative x and positive y
QII
Quadrant with both negative values
QIII
Quadrant with a negative y and positive x value
QIV
Origin
the starting point of the Cartisian Plane, (0,0)
X axis
the horizontal line, step #1 to find the point
Y axis
the vertical line in the Cartesian Plane, step #2 for finding the point
Ordered Pair
(x, y) the pair of numbers that tells you the point on The Plane
Quadrant of (3, -2)
QIV
Quadrant of (-3, 2)
QII
First Way to Graph Coordinate Pairs
xy chart: 1. find the equation 2. find the x (or y) values 3. plug and chug the x (or y) values into the equation 4. use your answer as the other coordinate for the pair 5. graph and draw a line EX. y=2x x -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 y -4, -2, 0, 2, 4
Second Way to Graph Coordinate Pairs
x and y intersect: 1. plug in 0 for the opposite value you are solving for using the equation given 2. graph your answer 3. repeat steps 1 and 2 once 4. draw a line connecting the two EX. y=2x + 1 y = 1 x = 1
Where is the x intercept?
Anywhere on the x axis
Where is the y axis?
Anywhere on the y axis
Solution
The coordinate pairs
EX.

y intercept
Linear Equations if given slope and y intercept
- identify values
- plug and chug into y=mx + b
- box answer
Linear Equations if given a line on a graph
- find the slope by i) doing rise over run ii) using y2-y1 over x2-x1
- find y intercept
- plug and chug values into y=mx + b
- box answer
Linear Equations if given 2 sets of ordered pairs
- find slope using y2-y1 over x2-x1
- find y intercept by plugging and chugging ALL values into y=mx + b
- plug and chug values into y=mx + b
Linear Equations if given an x/y table
- use 2 ordered pairs to calculate slope using y2-y1 over x2-x1
- calculate y intercept by plugging and chugging
- plug and chug values into y=mx + b
- box answer
Line of Fit
An estimate line that shows the rate of growth without connecting all the scatter plot points.
Making Predictions
VISUAL:
1. draw the line of fit all the way through
2. estimate
USING MATH:
1. plug in the x value for x into the linear equation
2. evaluate
3. box answer
