Unit 8: Plant Systems (Water System Protection Devices) Flashcards
Pressure Relief Valve
Used in hot water service to allow over pressured lines or tanks to release water and the associated pressure to escape.
Back Syphonage
The opposite of Back pressure or Back flow in that a vacuum is created in the supply system sucking water or steam backwards.
Flushometers/Flush Valves
Is a metering device that fill a toilet boil with a predetermined set amount of water and then closes the valve. Generally 6 litres
Watter Harmmer Arrestors
Are devices that soften the impact of water hammer. They can use air to slow down the water.
Effluents
are soil, waste and storm water. Can block drains or piping
Horizontal Branch Piping
is used to convey wastes from fixtures (faucets and Toilets) to the waste stack and then to the waste drain.
Pipe Traps
Used to prevent waste gases from flowing back up a drain by means of a water filled siphon.
Sump
A sub pump that discharges sewage waste into the municipal sewers. Generally used since the building waste stack is lower then the municipal sewage lines.
SAGD Sites
Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is an enhanced oil recovery technology for producing heavy crude oil and bitumen involving an advanced form of steam stimulation. Two horizontal wells are drilled into the oil reservoir, one a few meters above the other.
Infrared Occupancy Sensors
Detect motion based on heat radiated by people
Ultrasound Occupancy Sensors
Sense people based on sound vibration differences
