Unit 8 Metabolism Flashcards
Inhibitors
Molecules that slow down the rate of enzyme activity.
Competitive Inhibitors
Competitive Inhibitors bind to the active site of the enzyme which blocks the substrate from binding to the active site. The inhibitors are chemically similar to the substrate.
Non Competitive Inhibitors
Non competitive Inhibitors binds to the allosteric site of an enzyme, this changes the shape of the active site preventing the substrate from binding.
How to increase enzymes activity with competitive inhibitors
Increasing the substrate concentration will increase the enzyme activity because there will be a greater chance that a substrate will bind to the enzyme rather than the inhibitor. The inhibitor is in direct competition with the substrate.
