Unit 8 Flashcards
Eutrophication
nutrient saturation of water leading to oxygen depletion
Aquifer
underground pool of water wedged between rocks or sand that yields groundwater
Water pollution
occurs when harmful substances—often chemicals or microorganisms—contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading water quality and rendering it toxic to humans or the environment.
Pollution
contamination of the natural environment
Pathogen
any disease-producing agent
Pollutant
waste matter that contaminates the water, air, or soil
Runoff
While plants and animals need these nutrients to grow, they have become a major pollutant due to farm waste and fertilizer runoff.
Nutrient
any substance that can be metabolized to give energy
Nutrient pollution
includes nitrates and phosphates, is the leading type of contamination in these freshwater sources.
Algae
primitive chlorophyll-containing aquatic organisms
Pesticide
a chemical used to kill destructive insects or animals
Impermeable
preventing especially liquids to pass or diffuse through
Herbicide
a chemical agent that destroys plants or inhibits growth
Seep
pass gradually or leak or as if through small openings
Groundwater
When rain falls and seeps deep into the earth, filling the cracks, crevices, and porous spaces of an aquifer (basically an underground storehouse of water), it becomes groundwater—one of our least visible but most important natural resources.
