Unit 7.3 - Climate change (2) Flashcards
For unit 7 major (some key terms are missing)
Biodiversity
The variety of life in all its forms
Ecosystem diversity
Is the variety of ecosystems found in an area or Earth
Species diversity
Is the number and relative abundance of species found within an ecosystem
Genetic diversity
Is the variety of genes and alleles present in a species
Species
A group of organisms which can reproduce to produce fertile offspring
Extinction
Occurs when a species no longer exists
Pollution
The introduction of harmful substances or agents into the environment
Habitat
The environment in which a species normally lives or the location of a living organism
Invasive species
A non-native species which causes harm to the environment to which it has been introduced
Agriculture
the practice of cultivating plants and rearing animals for food, fibre, medicinal plants, and other products used to sustain and enhance human life
Richness
The number of different species
Evenness
How close the population numbers are to each other
Citizen scientists
Volunteer scientists who collect and share data with professional scientists
Simpson’s diversity index
The measure of the biodiversity of an ecosystem. Calculated by: D = N(N-1)/ (the sum of n(n-1)
