A

3 Southern states send in 2 election returns. 19 electoral college votes from 3 states were in question. Congress tries investigating with a commission made up of more Republicans who claim Hayes had won.

Compromise of 1877

A

In exchange for the presidency, Hayes agrees to several “favors.” Most important to the South was removal of the military from the 5 military districts. This officially ends the Reconstruction Era.

With the military gone, the South becomes more aggressive in their racial discrimination - Jim Crow Laws, Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896)
