Mail Merge
Automatically combining a list of data from, e.g. - an Access database of names and addresses, with a standard letter produced in a word process package, e.g. - Word, so that a series of letters are produced with each address being a different persons.
Template in Word
Pre-prepared/pre-designed documents which are partly completed and contain placeholder text and graphics to mark the point in the page which you can replace with your own.
Placeholder text
Text on a template which marks the position on the page where you can delete it and enter your own text.
Style sheet
Enables the formatting of a document to maintain consistency throughout (i.e. - font size/style/colour)
Animated transitions
Refers to the way slides or individual components such as text or graphics appear on the screen/disappear off the screen, such as fading.
Template in PPT
A pre-written/master slides with design AND some basic information already included and it saves you having to create a PPT from scratch.
Data compression
When data is stored in a format that requires less space (e.g. - bitmapped graphics or JPEGS)
Relational database
A large collection of data which is stored in tables that have links between them, that can be accessed by a range of different application programs for a variety of different purposes.
Query
When the user interrogates a database by searching, sorting or filtering to find specific information.
Report
A formatted output of the results from a database which are presented in a way that is controlled by the user (formatted i.e. - tables/graphs/grouping/results of searches)
Macro
A set of key strokes and menu choices recorded by the user as a small program and stored for future use when performing repetitive tasks. E.g. - adding a manager’s signature to a letter.
Importing/Exporting
The ability of a piece of software to read and use the data produced by a different piece of software or transferred data from one piece of software/application to another.
Cascading style sheet
Enables the quick and easy formatting of text on web pages to maintain consistency throughout the website, e.g., font style/colour/size.
Hyperlink
A link, e.g., object/text that when clicked, takes the user from one page/slide show in a document/PPT to a different place in the same document/PPT or a completely different file.
Frames
Used to split a window into sections and are sections of a web page in which semi-independent activities can take place.
