Motives
Specific need/desire that energizes behavior and directs it towards a goal
Emotions
Fear, Anger, Happiness, Sadness
Do humans have instincts?

Biological Drives (Primary)
Fight or flight, or drives that push us to stay alive like sex, hunger, and thirst
Homeostasis
Regulation of the body, which keeps it alive
Secondary Drives
Learned drives like success, wealth, and fame
What is peak motivation?
When primary and secondary drives are used together
Incentives
Environmental cues that trigger a motive for a reward
General Types of Rewards
INtrinsic and EXtrinsic
Intrinsic Motivators
Motivation from inside an individual (stronger than external)
Extrinsic Motivators
Motivation from external/outside awards (money/grades)
Drive Reduction Theory
Physiological need that creates a primary drive (drinking water to be less thirsty) (homeostasis)
Arousal Theory
Some of us tend to want more or less arousal at a given time
Yerkes-Dodson Law
If you want to perform well at a task you have to look at the difficulty of the task and your arousal
Maslow’s Hierarchy
Physiological, Safety, Belongingness, Esteem, Self-actualization
