Firearms Act 1968
Definition of shotgun?
Barrel length no shorter than 24”
Barrel bore not exceeding 2 inches in diameter
Magazine capable holding no more than two cartridges
Three modern types of shotgun?
Single barrel pump or semi-automatic
Double barrel, side by side
Double barrel, over and under
How is a relevant component part of a firearm defined?
Any part of the firearm which is essential for firing
What are the prohibited weapons under section 5(1) of the firearms act 1968?
- All firearms designed or adapted for continuous fire
- Most rifles which are capable of rapid fire
- Most shotguns capable of rapid fire (overall size easy to conceal, eg. Sawn)
- Any firearm disguised as another object
- Rocket launcher etc
- Air weapons with self contained gas cartridge system
- Firearms with barrel length of less than 30cm or overall length of less than 60cm
- Noxious liquids, gases, etc (pava, stun guns)
What is it an offence to have in a public place as per s.19 of firearms act 1968?
- loaded shotgun
- air weapon (loaded or not)
- any other firearm loaded, or unloaded if ammunition in their possession
- an imitation firearm (whether capable of firing or not)
Can someone under 14 possess a section 1 firearm (rifle)?
No
When can someone between 14 and 18 possess a firearm?
With certificate;
- slaughtering
- sporting
- vermin control
- competition
- shooting
- target and clay pigeon
Without certificate;
- gun bearer
- member of approved rifle club
- at shooting gallery
Can an under 18 purchase a shotgun or ammunition for it?
No
When can someone under 15 possess a shotgun?
If;
- supervised by adult 21+
- shotgun is securely fastened gun cover that it cannot be fired
- if it has been loaned to him
Can a shotgun be gifted to someone under 15?
No
Can a 15-18 obtain a shotgun certificate?
Yes but cannot purchase shotgun or ammunition
