Unit 7- LA 5 Flashcards
1
Q
How is atomic radius calculated?
A
Calculated based on distances between nuclei bonded together in molecules
2
Q
Atomic radius of diatomic molecules
A
Equal to covalent radius (one-half the distance between nuclei)
3
Q
Atomic radius of metals
A
Equal to metallic radius (one-half the distance between nuclei in metal lattice)
3
Q
Ions Atomic radius
A
Equals one-half the distance between ions in ionic crystal lattice
4
Q
Atomic Radii trends
A
- Increases going down a family (Inner shell electrons “shield” outer layers, decreasing the effective nuclear charge)
- Decreases going across a row
