-ide
For binary ionic compounds, when do we need to put the charge in parenthesis after the metal?
When multiple charges are possible for the metal (ex. Fe)
What is the rule for naming binary ionic compounds?
cation (usually metal) + cation charge (ONLY when multiple charges are possible)+ anion with suffix -ide added
How do you name molecular compounds?
first element (w/ prefix of amount, but NOT MONO)+ second element (w/ prefix of amount) + ide
What suffix is added to binary molecular compounds?
-ide
polyatomic ions
charged group of two or more atoms joined together by covalent bonds
oxoanions
polyatomic anions containing oxygen in combingation with one or more other elements
binary acids
- contain hydrogen and a monoatomic anion
- most contain halogens
- “hydro”+halogen base name+ic+acid
