Carbon footprint
A measurement of all the greenhouse gases we individually produce through burning fossil fuels
Concentrated resource consumption
A place or location where there is a high amount of resources consumed in a small location i.e. a megacity

Counter-urbanisation
The movement of people and employment from major cities to smaller settlements just beyond the city
Eco-footprint
A measure of how much land is needed to provide a place with all the energy, water and materials it needs
Informal economy
Forms of employment that are not officially recognised eg. street vendors, shoe shiners
Landfill
Disposal of rubbish by burying it and covering it with soil
Megacities
An urban area of more than 10 million people
The birth rate minus the death rate for a place. Normally given as a % of the total population
Natural increase
The presence of chemicals, noise dirt or other substances which have harmful effects on the environment
Pollution
The degree of well-being felt by an individual or group of people. Can be related to jobs, food, services etc
Quality of Life
When people who used to live in the city but moved to rural areas return to the city to live
Re-urbanisation
Where local government supplies residents with the means to improve their lives eg. Building materials
Self-help schemes
Informal settlements (slums) built on the edge of cities without permission e.g. Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro
Squatter settlements
Interconnected public transport systems to reduce congestion
