Unit 7: Arthrology (wip) Flashcards
arthrology
The study of joints, concerned with the classification and function of the hundreds of junctions between bones occurring in the body.
joint
Provides stability and/or mobility depending on its structure. Classified into three categories.
fibrous joints (fixed)
Consists of two bones that are united by fibrous tissue, have no joint cavity, and exhibit no movement. (e.g. skulls, border between radius and ulna)
cartilaginous joints (slightly movable)
Two bones are united by either hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage. (e.g. discs between vertebrae, symphysis pubis, costal cartilage between ribs and sternum)
synovial joints (freely movable) [WIP]
Most of the joints found in our bodies; surrounded by a capsule of dense fibrous connective tissue whose fibers are continuous with those of the periosteum of the bones which both protects and strengthen the joints.
ligaments
Strong, slightly elastic fibrous tissues that attach bones to each other which resists abnormal joint movements.
tendons
Bands of dense fibrous connective tissue that attach muscle to bones. Strong muscles around a joint help stabilize the joint.
bursae
Small pouch-like sacs that are lined with a synovial membrane and contain synovial fluid. Provides a fluid-filled cushioning and reduces friction between bones in the joints to tendons, skins, etc..
tendon sheath
A modified bursa that surrounds and lubricates the tendons of certain muscles, particularly those that cross the wrists and ankle joints.
