William Henry Harrison (Ol’ Tippecanoe) and Tyler too

A

First whig president. Webster and Clay thought that he would be a figure head and they would be pulling the strings. To prove them wrong, WHH has the longest inaugural address (8460 words/ almost 2 hours) while wearing no coat or gloves to prove he wasn’t to old for president position. Dies on his 32 day in office.

John Tyler “Tyler Too”

A

First Vice President to succeed the President due to death. Tyler wasn’t really a Whig but actually More of a state right supporter, he was only a Whig cause he hated AJ. Eventually kicked out of Whig Party due to him vetoing Whig programs. He vetos bank and did not want the America system.

Free Canada Movement (1837)

A

Small group of Canadians wanted independence. Some Americans provide supplies and were willing to fight. GB gets angry that US is getting involved.

Caroline Affair/Incident

A

The Caroline was an America steam boat supplying goods to Canadian rebels. The British find out and cross the border illegally and set fire to it pushing it over the falls with an American still on board.

Creole Affair/Incident

A

The Creole ship was transporting slaves from Virginia to Louisiana. The slaves took over the ship and goes down to the Bahamas where they find sanctuary with great Britain.

A

Compromises Maine boundary. America gets 7,000 sq miles Brit’s get 5,000. But Brit’s are happy because now they can build their Halifax-Quebec road.

Lone star republic (Texas)

A

Mexico threatened war with US if they annexed Texas. The US debates over annexation because of the questions of slavery. Texas turns to GB and France for protection.

A

Currently joint occupation between Brits and US per the convention of 1818. They start to argue over claims to territory.

The Oregon trail

A

Jedediah Smith established OR trail. The trail took about 5 months. Family units traveled the trail. Diseases were rampant along the trail. And charged tolls instead of attacking. Pararie Scooners or Connesroga wagons used to transport goods but people often packed to much and so the trail was littered with goods peoples dumped along the way.

Presidential election of 1844

Henry Clay (Whig ) vs. James Polk (democrat)
JKP first dark horse candidate. Was speaker of the house and governor of Tennessee. Was promoted as “young hickory. “ democrats argued the us claimed Texas during Louisiana purchase and that Oregon territory was theirs because of Lewis and Clark. Clay was sneaky and told the would one thing about Texas and the north the opposite. Polk wins

MANIFEST DESTINY

A

Belief that America should get land between the pacific and Atlantic because it’s GODS will.
Term was coined by John O’Sullivan in us magazine. Basically it justified expansion.

Texas annexed

A

John Tyler annexes Texas 13 days before leaving office to leave a legacy convinced that Polk would do it anyway once he was in office. 1845 Texas annexed and mainly carried out by Polk as a territory then a state. Because of this Mexico cuts off all diplomatic ties with the US.

James K Polk Presidency

A

Last “strong” president before civil war. Developed a four point plan for country.
1) Lower tariff (reduce to 25%)
2) restore independent treasury by having federal government exclusively manage funds
3) acquire California to trade with Asia
4) settle Oregon dispute (promised all of OR in campaign)

Ends the panic of 1837 and increase imports

Buchanan Packenham Treaty

A

Settles the OR territory dispute to extend the 49° parallel from the convention of 1818 all the way to the west coast.

Polls plan to buy California

A

Polk sends a John Slidell down to Mexico to negotiate $25 mil for California and lands east of California. However Mexico doesn’t even acknowledge Slidell when he comes.

The Mexican (American) war 1846

A

Polk sends General Zachary Taylor to guard Texas border at the disputed territory of the Rio Grande (Us thought Rio grande was border but Mexico thought it was smaller. ) Mexican troops find out and cross the rio grande to attack the troops (16 Us casualties.) Polk then asks congress to declare war claiming that they did everything possible to stop it. Claiming that there was “American blood shed on American soil”. Congresss voted for war but eventually sees polks lies and that he really wanted to do this so he could get California. Calls it “jimmy polks war”.
