Unit 7 Flashcards
Shapes of molecules + Bonds
What is fajuns rule concerning ionic compounds?
There will be a degree of dissociation if the anion large and the cation is small and highly charged
As you go down a group what happens to electronegativity?
It decreases as shielding wins over nuclear charge
What happens to electronegativity as you go across a period?
It increases as the nuclear charge increases
What is electronegativity?
The tendency of the atom to attract electrons to itself
What is an induced dipole?
Also known as Van der waals. When Electrons in a molecule are all at one end a dipole is created causing other molecules to be attracted
When do permanent dipoles occur?
Between polar molecules
How do dipole to dipole bonds affect melting points
Make it higher
Can induced dipole and induced dipole cause intermolecular forces?
No
If a molecule is symmetrical can it still be polar?
No
Order of electron pair repulsions?
lone pair- lone pair > bond pair- lone pair> bond pair- bond pair
Do ionic compounds have low or high melting points?
High
Do ionic compounds dissolved in water conduct electricity
Yes
Is there a lot of electron sharing in ionic compounds?
No
When ionic compounds are molten do they conduct electricity?
Yes
