Unit 5 Flashcards
Orbitals - wave/particle
What is the photoelectric effect?
When light interacts with a metal and produces a current. it emits electrons it happens when energy matches binding energy.
What is de broglies equation?
Wavelength = plancks / mass x velocity
planks #
6.7 X 10⁻³⁴
when electrons relax from one energy level to another what can they release?
Light
What does principal quantum number show?
indicates the energy level
what does orbital quantum number show?
The shape of the orbital
What is ionisation energy?
It is the amount of energy needed to remove an electron
What factors affect ionisation energy?
the amount of protons (more protons means more attraction)
the number of shells they can shield the electrons meaning they feel less attraction
Atomic Radius- further away feel less attracted
What is electron affinity?
It’s how much energy is given off when an atom gains an electron
What is electronegativity?
Ability of an atom to pull electrons towards itself
What is hybridisation?
if an electron is promoted to the next energy level (if its energetically favourable to form more bonds) the orbitals rearrange as identical hybridised orbitals
How do orbitals arrange themselves in space?
In such a way that reduces electron repulsion
What causes hybridisation?
If an electron is promoted to the next energy level the orbitals will be hybrids in order to make them identical
What is a property of waves?
Showing diffraction patterns when met with a diffraction grating
What is a property of particles?
All of nothing nature. its there or it isn’t
