Unit 4 Flashcards
Acids and Bases
What is an indicator?
A weak acid that shows different colours depending on the pH
What is a lewis base?
An electron pair donor
A lewis acid?
an electron pair acceptor
A Bronsted- lowry base?
A proton acceptor
A Bronsted- lowry acid?
A proton donor
if you titrate a stong acid with a weak base will the endpoint be above or below pH=7
Below
Is an acid containing a halogen weak or strong?
Apart from HF which is a weak acid they are all strong acids
What is a conjugate base?
its the species obtained when you remove a proton from an acid
What do strong and weak acids do?
Completely dissociate in water
pH is what?
-log [H+]
How do you work out H concentration?
10⁻ᵖᴴ
Ka is what? (equilibrium constant)
Products / reactants (concentrations)
What does dissolved c02 do?
Lowers pH
What can you use equilibrium constant to work out?
Degree of dissociation
What is a buffer solution?
A weak acid and its conjugate base. Its used to keep pH roughly the same
