Unit 61 - Be / get used to something Flashcards
A) For what do we use « prefer to » and « prefer -ing » ?
We can use « prefer to » and « prefer -ing » to say what you prefer in general
A) Study the differences in structure after prefer.
- I prefer something to something else.
- I prefer doing something to doing something else
but - how is it when we use « prefer to » ?
- I prefer something to something else.
- I prefer doing something to doing something else
but - I prefer to do something rather than (do) something else
- we use rather
B) Would prefer ( I’d prefer …)
When do we use would prefer ?
- We use would prefer to say what somebody wants in a specific situation ( not in general)
Example:
* Would you prefer tea or coffee? - Coffee please. - We say would prefer to do something (not usually would prefer doing)
C) Would rather (I’d rather…)
Would rather (do) = _ _ (to do). We use would rather + _ (without _)
Would rather (do) = Would prefer (to do) . We use we would rather + infinitive ( without to)
C) Would rather (I’d rather…)
What is the negative of it
- I’d rather not
D) I’d rather somebody did somehting
What is right?
- I’d rather you did something or
- I’d rather you do sth
We say I’d rather you did something ( not I’d rather you do)
- I’d rather you did something or
In this structure we use the _ ( drove did but the meaning is _ not _
In this structure we use the past but the meaning is present not past
What does:
I’d rather you did’t do something mean?
I’d prefer you not to do it
