Meech Lake Accord (1987)
Attempt to bring Quebec into confederation. Quebec made a “distinct society”
Charlottetown Accord (1992)
Had something for everyone. 54% voted “no” and was lead by Trudeau.

Key part in Canada becoming a welfare state. Free healthcare paid by taxes.
The Quiet Revolution
Not only caught up to Canada but passed them. Changes in Quebec that lead to the separatists movements in Quebec. Schooling modernized, Hydro Quebec showed potential and equality became important.
1980 Sovereignty Referendum
Rene Levesque held it. The “yes” side alienated women saying only housewives would vote “no”. “No” side won, 60% of Quebecors voted to stay in Canada.
1995 Sovereignty Referendum
“yes” side led by Jacques Parizeau(premier of Quebec, PQ). “No” side won again led by Jean Chrétien (PM)
War Measures Act
Gave the government the power to arrest and detain “enemy aliens” without trial or explanation.
Official Language Act of 1969
Labelling had to be both French and English and people could deal with federal government and courts in French.
Bill 101
“The Charter of French Language”. French was only language of business, government and courts. Business signs in French only, limited access to English schooling.
Charter of Rights and Freedoms
We are all equal as Canadian citizens. Ended assimilation.
