Indian Act (1876)
To implement and govern reserve life. Three goals: outlawing FN culture, define who is and isn’t FN, and regulate the lives of FN
Louis Riel
Leader of the Metis and their rebellions. Lost in Batoche and was tried for treason by Macdonald. Created previsionary government to challenge the current government and executed Thomas Scott.
Northwest Mounted Police
American whisky traders came to Canada, cypress hills massacre and needed to establish control of land was why they were created. Goals were to eliminate whisky trade, maintain law and order and gain respect of FN and break them of practices.
Northwest Rebellion 1885
Caused by settled meant surveyors caught up to Metis, disappearing Buffalo. CPR changing point by transporting 5000 soldiers in 10 days. CPR completed.
National Policy
Created by Macdonald and was an economic blueprint for Canada. Keep out American goods with tariffs, all Canadian grabs-continental railway and increased immigration. Increased cost of living and didn’t protect CN industries. Immigrants poured in but left for US.
Wilfred Laurier (1896-1911)
Leader of liberals. He supported the provincial government because he believed Canada was a cluster of states and one main government wouldn’t rule it.
Pacific Scandal
Hugh Allan gave money into Macdonald’s campaign and helped him win the election. Macdonald rewards Allan with railway charter. John A forced to resign after this.
Treaty Six
The treaty that is in our area. Agricultural based in that the government wanted the FN to farm the area.
Gabriel Dumont
One of leaders in Northwest Rebellion.
Red River Rebellion
Caused by no land tithes by Metis, their vision differed from Canada’s vision of west. Canada purchased Ruperts land without their consent. Thomas Scott executed, Macdonald gives in and makes Manitoba only province where French and English are equal.
General Frederick Middleton
Ended the rebellion in the Northwest Territories
Manitoba Schools Question
Ended publicly funded catholic schools and avoid he’s French as an official language.
Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR)
A railway that would unite Canada and stretch from sea to sea. It was key to confederation. And also key to Macdonald’s National Policy. Completed after Northwest Rebellion in 1885.
