John Cabot
Hoped to find route to Asia. Came upon fish and laid claim on Newfoundland. Broke trade secret and kept coming back. Went on second voyage but disappeared.
HBCo.
Founded by two French men (Radisson and Groseilliers) but supported by England. Became a rival to French and was a big part of CN history for 200 years.
Jacques Cartier
French explorer. 1st voyage he proved Newfoundland was an island and sailed down the St. Lawrence trying to find route to Asia. Kidnapped two sons of Chief Donnaconda and left. 2nd voyage he looked for Kingdom of Saguenay but it was made up. Took Donnaconda and 9 others. Put cross on “Mount Royal”, failed though making a French colony.
Samuel de Champlain
Established Quebec Habitation in 1608. Mistakenly got in war a war with the Huron and Iroquois and picked sides which started wars with the Iroquois for years.
Assimilation
A recurring theme in Canadian history. Europeans tried assimilating the Longhouse, Plains and Northwest People. The Royal Proclamation also tried to assimilate French in Quebec.
Fall of Quebec 1759
General Wolfe captured Quebec on the plains of Abraham. Huge loss to New France.
The Great Law of Peace
Creating sought to bring peace amongst First Nation tribes.
Royal Proclamation 1763
Recognized pre-existing FN land rights that aren’t already occupied by European settlers. It is the basis of modern day aboriginal land and treaty rights.
Quebec Act 1774
Britain’s attempt at accommodating the French in Canada. They couldn’t afford to fight another rebellion.
Five Nations Confederacy
Seneca, Oneida, Cayuga, Mohawk, Tuscarora and Onondaga.
