Unit 6: Types of Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Name every point in the Ph scale
1-7: Acids, H+ ions production
7: Neutral
7-14: Bases, OH- ions production
What happens to the Ph when an acid is added to a base
Bases lose their basicity when mixed with acids.
- WHY
What two ways can Ph be measured?
Indicators
Ph probe - more accurate
Acid
Releases H+ ions
Strong acid cause burn on skin.
Strong acids also destroy fabric.
Acids are electrolytes.
Base
Releases OH- ions
They can conduct electricity.
Bases feel slippery or soapy.
Acid + Base Reaction
Neutralisation Reaction. Results in a salt and water (because the H+ and OH+ make H20)
Properties of Strong Acids
They fully ionise. Meaning they fully dissolve in a liquid or meaning that there are no bound electrons left, resulting in a bare nucleus.
This makes them better than a weak acid.
eg. HCL, HNO3
