Unit 6- Mixtures and Solutions Flashcards
Distillation
Separation by using the substance boiling points
Centrifuge
Rapid spinning that separates the substances based on density
Decant
When you pour a liquid off a solid
Filtration
Separation of solids and liquids by using a porous barrier
Suspension
A diversion of large particles that are temporarily suspended in the liquid before naturally settling
Example of suspension
Orange and pulp
Colloid
Consists of 2 phases of matter and are only heterogeneous on a microscopic level
Examples of of colloids
Spray paint or milk
Solute vs. solvent
Solute is thing being dissolved while solvent is doing the dissolving
Miscible
Two liquids that dissolve in one another Ex: water and ethanol
Immiscible
Two liquids that can not dissolve in one another Ex: oil and water
Factors affecting solubility of gas:
Goes down with agitation
Higher pressure=increased solubility
Lower temp=increased solubility
Solubility rule
Polar dissolves polar and the same goes for no polar
Polar covalent: substances dissolve in subs in partial charges
Ionic: dissolves in full charges
Solvation
The surrounding of solute particles by solvent particles
Example of solvation
Salt in water
- salt breaks apart in water
- water surrounds particles
- reduces attraction in ions
- breaks apart and moves into solution
