Unit 6 lt 3 Flashcards
Hemostasis
Process of stopping bleeding during an injury to a blood vessel
Steps in hemostasis
Vascular spasm - contraction of smooth muscle in blood vessel
platelet plug - platelets gather at the site of the wound and bind together using collagen fibers
coagulation -
damaged tissues release a substance called PA
fibers catch blood cells and form long term clot
Nonspecific immunity
Provides general protection
inflammatory response, tears, skin, mucous,
Specific immunity
Involves memory and the ability to recognize and respond to certain harmful substances or bacteria (adaptive immunity)
natural - not deliberate and occurs because of everyday living
artificial - immunization and deliberate exposure
Active
individuals own immune system responds to a harmful agent
passive
when immunity has developed in someoe else and is transferred
Antibodies
Protein compounds that bind to bacteria, viruses, etc to trigger an immune response
antigens
protein ,molecules imbedded in the surface of invading or diseased cells
