UNIT 6: ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN CLASSROOM Flashcards
Strategy for developing entrepreneurship in schools +teachers role
• entrepreneurship clubs / projects • market days , flea markets • entrepreneurs / careers exhibitions • competitions • entrepreneurs as role models • entrepreneur programs TEAchers role in entrepreneurs. Training should : • not focus on single answer • goal orientated • use variety of teaching styles • surprise students( present the unexpected) • focus on opportunities • enhance self confidence • be facilitator to learners (make things happen)
**Five teaching methods used to teach entrepreneurship:
NB
1) Story-telling technique
• successful in teaching entrepreneurship
• difficult concepts can be explained by means of gesture, body language, picture’s and real life examples.
•introduce the learner to the life of the entrepreneur.
•the learners could be asked to tell a story about an entrepreneur
• Invite entrepreneurs to school or to class to come and tell their stories.
2) Game technique
• Currently used often in entrepreneurial programmes, both in South-Africa and overseas.
• strong elements of excitement +competition stimulate the interest of players
• learn best by playing games
• e.g board games, monopoly, cards, darts, puzzle games
3) Role –play technique
• acting out a situation to make seem real
• every learner is actively involved
• Learners much less restraint + they not scared of making mistakes
• learners take part in decision making processes + teaches them take risks without venturing into reality
4) Mentoring programme
• apprenticing a learner to an existing entrepreneurial enterprise
• gain experience in the business world without taking any risks
• entrepreneurs do not have the same obligations to learners as they do to other employees.
• E.g John has his own business and William likes to know all about it so John acts as a mentor teaching William what he knows. (like buying, sales, marketing)
5) Brainstorming technique
• Teaches students to work together
• Divides learners into smaller groups to discuss a common theme intensively, to generate new ideas or to try to solve problems
• Flashcards are useful (to express their ideas, to put them in order and to visualize the ideas)
6) group work
7) case study
8) active participation & experience
3 Reasons why a business fail in the first year:
NB
1) Incompetent management – Inadequate planning ,poor choice of location
- can’t manage staff
- poor marketing strategy
2) Lack of experience – not experienced in running a business
- don’t know the specific industry
- used to be workers and staff and now they have to manage the business
3) Poor financial planning – do not have enough money to survive the first month with low sales
- not enough money to purchase suffiecient stock or fixed assets
- takes a few months before the business becomes known in the area
4) Working without a plan – prepare very elaborate business plan to start
- never go back and look at their plans again and change it
- think they are clever enough to manage “by the skin of their teeth”
5) poor financial control
6)inflexibility
7)unrealistic time frames
8)not doing enough research
9) too many interruptions
10)working without a plan
