A

Small number of items produced (customer specification), small businesses, small and large items produced each unique.
:) customer requirements can be made, associated with being a higher quality, more job satisfaction, flexible production method.
:( individual cost may be high, labour intensive, reliant on high skills.

Batch production (Eg. Hovis bread)

A

Similar items produced together, concentrate skills, labour is divided, achieve better use of equipment, each batch goes through the stage of production before moving on.
:) cost saving can be achieved (buying in bulk), still allows customer some choice.
:( tasks become boring, all need to be the same, bus. need to maintain high stock of raw materials, takes time to switch production from one batch to another.

Flow production

A

Products move continuously move through production process.
:) makes large quantities, capital intensive (can work constantly), need less training + skills.
:( long set up time, high raw materials + finished stocks, mass produced (less differentiation for customers).

Process Production

A

A series of processes with raw materials, requires continuous conversion (heat, time, pressure), output takes place over a long period of time, product is often complete and cannot be broken down ie. beer
:) process normally automated (reduces unit costs), large quantities produced.
:( heavy investment, difficult and disruptive, expensive, time consuming
