Domino Theory
1954; Eisenhower warned that if Vietnam became communist, all of Asia would follow; caused the formation of the South Eastern Asia Treaty Organization patterned on NATO and refused to sign the Geneva Peace Accords
Tet Offensive
1968; National Liberation Front and North Vietnamese forces launched a huge attack on the Vietnamese New Year (Tet), which was defeated after a month of fighting and many thousands of casualties; major defeat for communism, but Americans reacted sharply, with declining approval of LBJ and more anti-war sentiment
Guerrilla Warfare
A hit-and-run technique used in fighting a war; fighting by small bands of warriors using tactics such as sudden ambushes
Agent Orange
A chemical weapon that revealed Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army hiding places by destroying forests, brush, and crops. It was later discovered that the chemical had effects on livestock and even humans, like Vietnamese civilians and American troops.
Search and Destroy
a U.S. strategy used in Vietnam in which American forces sought Vietcong and North Vietnamese units in rural villages to destroy them and prevent them from returning
Fall of Saigon
Marked the end of the Vietnam War in April, 1975 when North Vietnamese invaded South Vietnam, forcing all Americans left to flee in disarray as the capitol was taken
My Lai
…, 1968, in which American troops had brutally massacred innocent women and children in the village of My Lai, also led to more opposition to the war.
