Unit 5: Vertebral, Thorax, and Upper Limbs Flashcards
Vertebral column
A series of bony vertebrae posterior to the ventral body cavity.
Intervertebral discs
Intervertebral foramen
Formed from portions of both vertebrae and allow passage of spinal nerves
Vertebral foramen
Body of vertebrae
Large disc-shaped bony portion
Vertebral arch
The arch of bone emerging from the body of vertebra; composed of pedicles and laminae
Pedicles
Portions of arch attaches to vertebral body
Laminae
Portions of vertebral arch that connect 2 pedicles and complete arch
Transverse process
Two lateral processes within transverse plane
Superior articular processes
Two processes projecting superiorly
Inferior articular processes
Two processes that project inferiorly
Spinous process
Process emerging at midpoint of vertebral arch and projects posteriorly
Transverse foramina
2 additional openings in cervical vertebrae piercing the base of transverse process
Atlas
1st cervical vertebra that articulates with the occipital condyles
Axis
2nd cervical vertebra contains dens
Dens
Tooth like superior projections on axis
Sacrum
Contains 5 fused bones and articulates with the hip bone
Coccyx
3-5 fused bones remnants of long embryonic tail early in development
Thorax
Contains sternum, ribcage, and vertebral column
Sternum
Formed from fusion of manubrium, body, and xiphoid process
