Unit 5: Vertebral, Thorax, and Upper Limbs Flashcards
Vertebral column
A series of bony vertebrae posterior to the ventral body cavity.
Intervertebral discs
Intervertebral foramen
Formed from portions of both vertebrae and allow passage of spinal nerves
Vertebral foramen
Body of vertebrae
Large disc-shaped bony portion
Vertebral arch
The arch of bone emerging from the body of vertebra; composed of pedicles and laminae
Pedicles
Portions of arch attaches to vertebral body
Laminae
Portions of vertebral arch that connect 2 pedicles and complete arch
Transverse process
Two lateral processes within transverse plane
Superior articular processes
Two processes projecting superiorly
Inferior articular processes
Two processes that project inferiorly
Spinous process
Process emerging at midpoint of vertebral arch and projects posteriorly
Transverse foramina
2 additional openings in cervical vertebrae piercing the base of transverse process
Atlas
1st cervical vertebra that articulates with the occipital condyles
Axis
2nd cervical vertebra contains dens
Dens
Tooth like superior projections on axis
Sacrum
Contains 5 fused bones and articulates with the hip bone
Coccyx
3-5 fused bones remnants of long embryonic tail early in development
Thorax
Contains sternum, ribcage, and vertebral column
Sternum
Formed from fusion of manubrium, body, and xiphoid process
Xiphoid process
Inferior bone of sternum that hasn’t completely ossified and is hyaline cartilage
Costal facets
Vertebral end
Hook shaped part of rib
Sternal end
Smooth oval shape that attaches to costal cartilage
Spine of scapula
Posterior side of scapula
Acromion
emerges from spine, is superior
Glenoid cavity
Faces laterally and articulates with head of humerus
Superior border
One of 3 borders of scapula
Lateral border
Ones of 3 borders of scapula
Medial border
Ones of 3 borders of scapula
Infraspinous fossa
Shallow depression below spine of scapula
Supraspinous fossa
Shallow depression above spine of scapula
Subscapular fossa
Anterior depression of scapula
Coracoid process
Shape of ravens head on top of scapula
Greater tubercle
Larger bony projection of humerus near head
Lesser tubercle
Smaller bony projection of humerus near head
Intertubercular groove
Groove between tubercles
Deltoid tuberosity
Rough bony bump on lateral side of diaphysis
Medial epicondyle
Medial muscle attachment point at distal end of humerus
Lateral epicondyle
Lateral muscle attachment point at distal end of humerus
Trochlea
Medial bow tie shape condyle
Capitulum
Head/baseball shaped condyle that articulates with head of radius
Olecranon fossa
Depression in distal end of humerus where ulna articulates
Coronoid fossa
Radial tuberosity
Rounded bump on anterior diaphysis of radius
Styloid process
Slender process of radius that points towards thumb
Ulnar notch
Indentions that articulates with head of ulna
Trochlear notch
U shaped indentations wraps around trochlea of humerus
Radial notch
Lateral facing indentation near trochlear notch and articulates with head of ulna
Distal Phalanx
Most distal bone of phalange
Middle phalange
Middle bone
Proximal phalange
Bone connecting to wrist
