Unit 2: Tissue Flashcards
Epithelium
Lining/covering and glandular tissue
Connective
Supportive and nutritive tissue
Muscular
Contracts to produce movement
Nervous
Integration and control
Simple squamous
Single row of thing cells. Permits rapid diffusion/transport of substances/secretes serous fluid
Simple Cuboidal
Single layer of square/round cells. Absorption/secretion and mucus production/movement
Simple columnar
Tall/narrow cells. Absorption/secretion/mucus. May possess goblet cells
Stratified squamous
Deepest layers undergo mitosis. Offers protection. Can be keratinized or nonkeratinized.
PCCE
Cells touch basement membrane. Secretes/propels mucus. Helps prevent debris from entering by sweeping it back down
Transitional
Expands/collapse/protection. Urinary system organs
Goblet
Wine glass shaped mucus secreting cells
Fibroblasts
Produce fibers and ground substance of matrix
Chondroblasts
Cartilage cells that produce the matrix that wraps them
Chondrocytes
Cartilage cells that are trapped in cavities
Areolar
Loosely organized fibers/abundant blood vessels/empty space
Adipose
Cushions organs/insulates/energy. Found in hypodermis
Reticular
Found internally in soft bodied organs giving them their shape. Spleen
Dense regular
Resists pulling forces. Tendons/ligaments
Dense irregular
Collagen fibers that resist forces from multiple directions. Dermis/walls of hollow organs
Hyaline Cartilage
Provides rigidity and protects
Fibrocartilage
Resist compression and absorbs shock. Menisci of knee/vertebral discs
Bone
Cells/fibers/ground substance. Nutrients/support/protection/attachment site
Blood
Fluid/transport cells and dissolved matter from place to place
Extracellular Matrix
Ground substance and fibers/non living matrix
Ground substance
Water stabilized by large organic molecules
Fibers
Loose and dense connective tissue
Collagen fibers
Fiber in extracellular matrix that’s elongated and made up of collagen glycoproteins
Elastic fibers
Mainly connective tissue component in extracellular matrix. Produced by fibroblasts/smooth muscle cells/some chondrocytes
Reticular fibers
Fine fibrous connective tissue occurring in networks to make structure and form for soft tissue organs
