Unit 5 topic 3 Science Flashcards
How are lakes and ponds different?
Lakes - deeper, sunlight doesn’t always reach the bottom.
Vegetation will grow AROUND the shore
* Lakes usually have a larger volume of water
Ponds - More shallow, sunlight does reach the bottom.
Vegetation can grow throughout
* YES can have a larger AREA than a lake
What is clarity?
How clear the water is
What do all wetlands have in common?
LOW LYING areas that are SATURATED with water.
ex/ marshes, bogs, slough, swamp areas
What do more bubbles in the water mean?
More bubbles in water mean more oxygen
What is groundwater?
Fresh water found under the Earth’s surface.
ex/ wells, springs, water table
Name Canada’s FIVE MAJOR drainage basins. Where does St Albert water flow?
- Atlantic
- Pacific
- Hudson Bay
- Arctic
- Mississippi
St. Albert’s water flows in the Arctic, Atlantic, Hudson, and possibly Mississippi
Where will St.Alberts water NOT end up and why?
St. Albert’s water will not end up in the Pacific Ocean because of our rocky mountains, water cannot flow over the mountains. We call this ‘Continental Divide’.
Landforms determine the size of a ______. The upstream areas of a watershed are called ______. The end point of water flowing through is called ______. The outflow is usually a river _____
- Watershed
- Headwater
- Outflow
- Mouth
What is runoff and erosion?
Run off - amount of water, melt water, slope of land, type of land - VEGETATION VS ROCK
Erosion - moving sediment
What is deposition?
To deposit something means to drop it off - sediment
Meandering River - Outside bend = erosion
Inside bend = deposition
What is streamflow?
Streamflow is the amount of water discharged by a water shed.
*Important to know HOW MUCH and if its CHANGING
How aquifers and the water table related?
Aquifers - Porous layer of rock that holds water and controls the level of our water table
Water table - forms when the layers of porous rock are FULL. Layers of water on top of the aquifer.
What is point source?
Where the source of a pollutant is from a small, defined area. You can point out the direct cause
ex/ leaking gasoline, spills
What is point source?
Where the source of a pollutant is from a small, defined area. You can point out the direct cause
ex/ leaking gasoline, spills
What is non-point source?
Where a pollutant comes from a WIDE area. Can’t point out the direct cause
ex/ run off from farm land treated with fertilizers and pesticides
