Unit 5- states of consciousness Flashcards
Consciousness
our subjective awareness of ourselves and our environment. it is also a part of our dual processing system.
Dual Processing system
two- track minds ie. what we consciously take in and what we unconsciously/ automatically take in.
Hypnotic ability
the ability to focus attention total on a task, to become imaginatively absorbed into it, to entertain fanciful possibilities
Posthypnotic suggestions
relieve pain, stress, asthma, and headaches
What can impact hypnosis?
the hypnotists likability, whether or not the hypnotist is authoritative or not, whether or not they are seen as legitament.
Circadian Rhythm
is our internal biological clock that is set on a 24 hour cycle of day to night.
What can alter your rhythm?
Age and experience
What did Aserinsky discover?
Every 90 mins we cycle through distinct stages. He discovered this by testing the EEG on his son as he slept
What is the NREM-1 stage?
Slipping into sleep, when your breathing slows and irregular brain waves occur
What is the NREM-2 stage?
Lasts about 20 mins you relax more deeply and have sleep spindles
Sleep spindles
bursts of rapid rhythmic brain waves
What is the NREM-3 stage?
Deep sleep, last about 30 mins, slow wave activity.
What happens during REM sleep?
Your heart rate rises, your breathing is rapid and irregular, and your eyes dart around. You begin to dream in this stage.
What happens neurologically during REM?
your motor cortex is active but the brainstem blocks its messages. (paralysis)
Suprachiasmatic nucleus
a pair of rice grain sized, 10,000 cell cluster in the hypothalamus. This decreases and increases melatonin production.
Ghrelin
Hunger arousing hormone
Leptin
Hunger suppressing hormone
Cortizol
Stress hormone
Cyberloaf
Fritter time away online
Insomnia
Problem falling and staying asleep
Narcolepsy
Sudden attacks of sleepiness, triggered by strong emotions
Sleep apnea
intermittently stop breathing during sleep
Night terrors
Walk around during sleep with doubled heart and breathing rates (mostly kids)
Sleepwalking and sleep talking
happens during NREM-3 and talking at anytime
Daydream vs REM
Daydream- familiar details
REM- vivid, emotional and bizarre
Manifest content
the apparent storyline
Latent content
unconscious drives and wishes
REM rebound
when REM sleep increases after deprevation
Activation-synthesis theory
It states that a dream is the cerebral cortex processing nerve impulses being sent from the body to the brain stem into something that makes sense
