UNIT 5: Safety In Transportation Flashcards
Which age group of drivers typically experience more serious car accidents/ fatalities?
15 - 24
What is reaction time?
The time it takes you to recognize a problem and act on it.
Low reaction time is better because you react faster
What are distractors? What are their affects on reaction time?
Anything that takes your attention away from the road.
They slow your reaction time greatly
What is a stimulant? What is a depressant?
Stimulant: increase your heart rate and decrease reaction time
Depressant: slows reactions, sleepy
What is the legal limit for BAC in Alberta?
0.05% limit
What is whiplash? How can you prevent it?
Occurs when the muscles and ligaments of your neck are sprained.
Headrest properly placed.
What is thinking, braking, and stopping distance?

- Airbags
- Seat belts
- Anti-Lock brakes
- emergency braking
What are different road safety features that the government puts into place to decrease fatalities?
Airbags
Seatbelts
How to calculate speed?
Speed= distance ÷ time
Speed: v
Distance=d
Time=t
What does the slope of a graph represent?
Steepness of a line
How fast it’s going
How do you calculate distance?
Distance = speed × time
D= v × t
What is momentum?
Measure of an object’s motion and its ability to stay in motion
How do you calculate momentum
Momentum= Mass x Speed
M= Mass
V= Speed
P= Momentum
What is impulse?
Change in momentum
