Define Manifest Destiny
America’s destiny to stretch across the entire continent from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. (Westward Expansion)
What did President Polk do?
Brought in lots of land to accomplish Manifest Destiny.
Define Gold Rush
Many people moved to California in search of Gold. (49ers)
Mass production
Factories made bulk and it made it easier for products to be made quicker.

Louisiana Purchase
-Doubled the Size of the U.S. overnight
- Gained land from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains
- Gave control over the Port of New Orleans
Texas Annexation
If Texas was annexed it would create unbalance between slave and free states. Texas was annexed on December 29, 1845. North did not want Texas but the South did because of slavery.
Florida Cession (Adam Onis-Treaty)
-U.S. argued with Spain to gain Florida
-The U.S. thought that Florida as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
-The U.S. captured Spanish forts so Spain gave up claims about Florida.
-Gained Florida in 1819
-Control entire Atlantic Coast
Mexican War/Mexican Cession
-Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended war
-War started because of Texas’s annexation
-Fought over the border line of Texas
-Treaty gave the U.S. parts of California and New Mexico
-War ended in 1848
-Helped America expand west
Oregon Territory
-Acquired by treaty signed with Britain and U.S. in 1846. It gave the U.S. all of Oregon land south of the 49th parallel
-President Polk wanted more land to fulfill Manifest Destiny
-Britain and U.S. fought over border
Gadsden Purchase
-IN 1853 the U.S. completed it’s expansion towards the southwest with the Purchase.
-Purchase was an agreement to buy a strip of land that could be used to build a railroad from the South to the Pacific Coast
-James Gadsden was responsible for the deal
-He agreed to pay 10 million $for the land that was almost as big as Pennsylvania
Mormon Trail
Who - large groups of settler and mormons
Why - to search for religious freedom and not face persecution
Where - Salt Lake City Utah
Oregon Trail
Who - farmers and settlers
Why - moved for cheaper land
Where - Oregon Country
Horace Mann
-campaigned for better, free, and public education
-he was from Massachusetts
-he made an elementary school for children free and compulsory
-he introduced the first schools to train teachers
Dorothea Dix
-Fought for better prison conditions and for better hospitality for the mentally ill
Fredrick Douglas
-abolitionist, author, newspaper editor
-Spoke out powerfully in the open against slavery and racism
Harriet Tubman
-helped the Underground Railroad
-escaped slavery in 1849
-returned to her family and helped them escape slavery as well
-was a scout, spy, and nurse in the CIvil War
Elizabeth Cady Stanton
-mother of four
-fought for women’s rights
Susan B. Anthony
-spoke out and protested for women’s rights
Harriet Beecher Stowe
-Wrote UNcle Tom’s Cabin that showed how harsh slavery was
- her book energized anti-slavery forces in the Northern states, while causing widespread anger in the Southern states
