-1861 Kansas = free state
-The Republicans party was created to stop slavery from spreading

-Abraham Lincoln was elected
-South thought he would get rid of slavery so they created the Confederate States of America
What did the fugitive slave law do?
-was a crime to help re-capture run-away slaves
-Slaves could be arrested and taken/returned to their owners
-Northerners = against this act
-South believed they had the right to have their “property” returned
What did state rights provide?
They had the right to ignore or follow federal laws
What were the effects of the Missouri Compromise?
-main = admitted as free state
-Missouri = admitted as slave state
-slavery was banned north of the 36º30º line (Missouri’s southern border)
-THIS COMPROMISE TRIED TO KEEP THE FREE STATES AND THE SLAVE STATES EQUAL!

NORTH:
-North relied on factories
-relied on manufacturing
-relied on immigrants as their labor force
SOUTH:
-relied on slaves for their labor force
-relied on agricultural land
-used farms
-creation of cotton gin = increase in slave population.
