Unit 5: Relations & Functions Flashcards
What is a set?
A distinct collection of ordered elements.
What is an element?
A single object, thing, in a set.
What is a relation?
Association of elements from one set to elements of another set.
What is a function?
A relation where each independendent value associates with exactly one dependent value.
What is an independent variable?
A variable that may be freely chosen and upon which other values depend on.
What is a dependent variable?
A variable that is determined by another variable.
What is the domain?
Set of values of independent variables.
What is the range?
Set of values of dependent variables.
What is continuous data?
Has an infinite number of possible values that can be measured, especially between points.
What is discrete data?
Has an finite number of possible values that can be measured, especially between points.
What is function notation?
Method of writing a relation that’s a function.
f(x) = y
What is a linear relation?
Relation whose graph approximates a straight line.
A constant change in independent -> constant change in dependent.
What is the rate of change?
Ratio of change in the dependent variable compared to the independent: y/x
What are the four way one can represent a relation?
- Words
- Table Diagram
- Arrow Diagram
- Ordered Pairs
How do you calculate and interpret rate of change?
RoC = change in dependent / change in independent
