unit 5 polymers Flashcards
what is addition polymerisation?
The C=C double bond will open up and bond with other molecules.
What is condensation polymerisation?
A small molecule (water) is lost as molecules join together
Each monomer has at least two functional groups than react with a different group on a different molecule
Name water soluble polymer and say why it is soluble
Poly(ethanol). Formed from ethanol and it contains an OH for hydrogen bonds with water
How are polyamides formed?
Dicarboxylic acids react with amino groups of diamines to give amide links (-CONH-)
Water is formed in the process.
What are some of the physical properties of polyamides?
Very high tensile strength
Can be used at high temperatures and are resistant to most chemicals.
How are polyesters formed?
Dicarboxylic acids and diols form ester links (-COO-)
Water is formed in the process
How is terylene formed?
Ethane-1,2-diol reacts with benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid
What are peptide links?
C double bonded to O and an NH
How do proteins form?
A condensation reaction between two amino acids.
The COOH of one acid and the NH2 of another bond to give a peptide link and water.
