What’s liveability?
All the characteristics of a community that contribute to the quality of life of the people who live there
What’s sustainability?
Improving the quality of human life while living within the carrying capacity of supporting ecosystems.
- must ensure people with a lower standard of life have access to the resources needed to improve it.
What’s carrying capacity?
The ability of the environment to support a population without environmental damage.
- Need to live within the limits of available resources so future generations will be able to live as we do
How can we balance liveability and sustainability?
On a global basis, we must
- meet basic needs
- satisfy wants
- be able to afford needs and wants
- do this while minimizing impact on the environment
What’s land use?
Various functions of land in an urban or rural area
What’s residential density?
A measure of the number of housing units per hectare
What are lower-order goods and services?
Goods and services that are purchased frequently. Generally these goods and services are inexpensive
What are higher-order goods and services?
Goods and services that are used infrequently. These goods and services are quite specialized and expensive
What’s an official plan?
An important document that all municipalities must have that lays out the general policies to be followed to achieve long-term planning goals
What’s zoning?
The result of detailed planning process that specifies exactly what land uses are allowed in each part of municipality.
What’s land-use zoning?
Creation of 2 documents the official plan of a municipality and detailed zoning maps based on the official plan.
What’s land use conflict?
A situation that exists when adjacent land uses interfere with each other in some way. Noise, smell, dust, traffic, air/water pollution
What’s urbanization?
Growth in the percentage of a country’s population that lives in cities and towns.
What’s urban growth?
Growth in the number of people who live in cities and towns.
What’s urban sprawl?
Large uncontrolled expansion of cities onto adjacent rural lands.
What are green belts?
An area of rural land around a city that cannot be built on.
What are some advantages of the green belt?
Protect and promote natural environment for humans and animals. Help clear our air, filter our water and maintain biodiversity.
What’s a 20-minute neighbourhood?
A community in which important destinations are within 1.6km.
What’s the human development index?
The human development index (HDI) is a measure of overall quality of life that combines measures of wealth, health, and education.
What’s an ecological footprint?
An ecological footprint is used to measure the demands that individuals pace on the natural environment.
What’s gross domestic product per capita?
The GDP is a measure of the size of an economy, in dollars, divided by population. It’s the most commonly used measure of health
What’s gross national happiness?
A measure of the happiness of a population
What’s environmental performance index?
The EPI is a UN- produced measure for evaluating performance in a wide range of environmental fields
What’s happy planet index?
The HPI is a measure that combines quality of life and sustainability
