Unit 2 - Imteractions With The Physical Environment Flashcards
What’s a survey System?
A grid system used to locate and identify parcels of land and road.
What are plate tectonics?
The theory that the earths outer shell is make of individual plates that move causing earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains.
Name the 3 types of plate movement and what they do with examples.
Divergent - two plates move apart from each other (volcanoes are formed)
Convergent - continental meets oceanic (subduction) and continental meets continental (mountains)
Transform - 2 plates more parallel in opposite directions
What are the impacts of glaciation?
By erosion - 1. Removal of materials 2. Changes to drainage patterns
By deposition - by ice > 3. Till plains 4. Moraines
by meltwater > 5. Moving water 6. Still water
What’s weathering?
The breaking down of rocks.
What’s erosion?
The moving of broken-up pieces of rock.
What’s deposition?
The building up of eroded material in a new place.
Name the 3 highlands.
- Innuitian Mountains
- Western Cordillera
- Appalachians
Name the 3 lowlands.
- Interior Plains
- Great Lakes - St. Lawrence lowlands
- Hudson Bay lowlands
Name all 7 landform regions in Canada.
Lowlands - Interior Plains, Hudson Bay Lowlands, Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Lowlands
Highlands - Innuitian Mountains, Western Cordillera, Appalachian
Canadian Shield
What does LOWERN stand for?
Latitude Ocean currents Winds and air masses Elevation Relief Near water
What’s a maritime climate?
A maritime climate is a climate near oceans, the annual temperature rand is low and precipitation high
What’s annual temperature range?
Temperature of warmest month minus temperature of coldest month
What’s a continental climate?
Climate in areas far from ocean, large annual temperature range and low precipitation
Name the 8 climate regions of Canada
- Arctic
- Taiga
- Cordilleran
- Pacific Maritime
- Boreal
- Prairie
- Southeastern
- Atlantic Maritime
What’s a soil profile?
The three different layers that exist in the soil beneath the surface of the ground. Each layer has a particular combination of physical, biological and chemical characteristics.
Name both technical and common terms in a soil profile.
A horizon- Topsoil
B horizon- subsoil
C horizon- parent material
What are wet climate soils?
Soils that develop where leaching is the dominant soil forming process.
What are dry climate soils?
Soils that develop where calcification is the dominant soil-forming process.
