Unit 5 - Lesson 1 Flashcards
Water Cycle
The movement of water from Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back again 🌨➡️🌎➡️⤴️🌫
The Sun ☀️ provides the energy for water to move through the water cycle
Evaporation
The changing of water from a liquid to a gas
Atmosphere
The mixture of gases that surrounds Earth
Water Vapor
The invisible gas that is formed when water evaporates
Condensation
The changing of water from a gas to a liquid
Clouds
Fog
Made of water droplets or ice crystals or both
A cloud that forms near the ground
Precipitation
Water that falls from clouds to Earth’s surface.
Example: rain, snow and hail
Groundwater
Water that is stored underground - can be near the surface or very deep
Runoff
Water that cannot soak into the ground but flows across Earth’s surface
Glacier
A large slow-moving mass of ice
Aquifer
A body of rock that stores groundwater. A huge underground water reservoir
People can drill into an aquifer and pump water to the surface.
Recharge Areas
Places where water is added to an aquifer by precipitation
Transpiration
The process in which plants 🪴 return water vapor to the atmosphere
