What is Imperailism?
The practice of one country gaining economic& political power over another country
What is Racism?
The belief that one race is superior to others
What is Social Darwinism?
Those who were fittest for survival enjoy wealth and success and were considered superior to others
What is a colony?
a territory under the political control of another country.
What is the Congo?
A country in Africa know for their rubber trees. Colonized by Belgium in 1885.
What was the Berlin Confrence?
14 European Nations met at the Berlin conference in 1884-85 to lay down rules for the “scramble to Africa”
What is Assimilation?
A policy that was based off the idea that in time, the local populations would adopt the culture and become just like the colonists

The unsuccessful resistance attempts included active military resistance and religious resistance
Who was Menelik II?
The Emperor of Ethiopia in 1889 and successfully played Italy,Britain, and France against each other to stop bringing Ethiopia into their sphere of influence

Indian soliders

British rule over India
What is the Sepoy Mutiny/Rebellion?
Sepoys rebelled against the East India Company which spread to the North and Central India
What was the Opium War?
The growing supplies for Opuim in China caused problems. The Qing emperor was angry about the situation and wrote a letter to queen Victoria about the problem. Caused a war the Chinese lost.
What are extraterritorial rights?
Included in a treaty following the war, these rights foreigner not subject to Chinese law at Chinese ports
What is the Taiping Rebellion?
A movement created by Hong Xiuqan to create a kingdom where all Chinese people would share chinas vast wealth and no one would live in poverty
What is a Sphere of Infulence?
An area in which the foreign nation controlled trade and investment
What was the Open door Policy?
Chinas “doors” would be open to merchants of all nations
What was the Boxer Rebillion?
A rebellion started by peasants to demonstrate their discontent as foreigners got special privileges
What is the Treaty of Kanagawa?
A reply to a threat of Millard Fillmore asking to allow free trade between the US and Japan
What was the Meiji Era?
Mutsuhito took control of the government and realized the best way counter western influence was to modernize.
What was the Russo-Japanese War?
Japan launched a supprires attack on Russian ships. Japan drove out Russian troops out of koras and captured most of the pacific fleet
What is Annexation?
Brining the country under another countries rule
