Conservative
Seeks to uphold the traditions, beliefs, and practices of the nation/system (orthodox)
Liberal
Seeks to progress, change, and adapt current system in a modern context with evolving standards (progressive)
Moderate
Blend of liberal and conservative ideals that rejects extremism; centrist
Radical
Seeks to overthrow system & conventions for a new system (leftist)
Ex. George Washington and all that stuff
Reactionary
Seeks to overthrow current system & return to a system of the past (rightist)
limited government
Government power must be checked that way rights and liberties can be secured
equality
All Americans should have the same fair treatment by the government and have equal opportunity for success
democracy
A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typical through elected representatives
civic duty
Americans feeling obligated to take community affairs seriously and help out when they can
individualism
The belief that individuals are responsible for themselves and the decisions they make
free enterprise
An economic system in which private business operates largely free of government control
rule of law
A system of laws or rules that delivers 4 universal principles:
-Accountability
-Just law
-Open government
-Accessible and impartial justice
Family Determinant
Genetic predisposition & family experiences account for ½ of influence of political beliefs
Gender Determinant
Women tend to favor Democratic candidates and lean liberal ideological more than men
-history of gender inequality, reproductive rights, etc.
Education determinant
Typically attending college moves individuals left on social issues, not as much on size of governmental issues
Geography determinant
Typically more rural, more conservative, while more urban, more liberal
Religion determinant
Rather than only religious identification, the level of religious involvements plays a role in the impact on ideology
Race
essentially biological, “singular” trait established by society, hierarchical in society
ethnicity
where you live, nationality, cultural tendencies, language, religion, culture
Race/Ethnicity & Social class determinants
Depends on how long you have been in the country; immigrant laws, etc.
Medicare
a federal program that provides health insurance to seniors and the disabled
Medicaid
a federal program that provides healthcare for the poor
actions that the Federal Reserve uses in implementing monetary policy.
