Unit 5-Final Exam Study Guide Flashcards
Direct seeding
involves planting seeds directly in the soil outdoors.
Indirect seeding
Planting seeds indoors and growing seedlings prior to transplanting
Identify the group of diseases that causes issues in the early phases of the plant’s life cycle as seedlings.
Damping-off, which are fungal diseases that causes the stems to rot at the soil line.
Scarcification
the process of breaking the seed coat. This can be accomplished artificially either by nicking the seed coat or by soaking the seed in dilute acid for a brief period of time.
Stratification
a physical method of breaking seed dormancy. This can be accomplished by placing seeds on a moist medium at warm temperatures or at cold temperatures. The seeds may also be treated with gibberellic acid.
What hormone is used to induce rooting?
Auxin.
Describe grafting in terms of scion and rootstock.
Connecting two plants or plant parts so that they will unite and continue as one plant. The rootstock is the bottom part of graft union in contact with soil and the scion is the short piece ofstem above the stock with one or two buds.
Layering
A simple method of asexual propagation in which roots are formed on the stem while still attached to the parent plant.
Separation
A natural structure (bulbs, corms, or crocus) is removed from the parent plant and grows on its own.
Division
Cutting plant parts into sections as a means of propagation. Examples are rhizomes like iris or tubers like Irish potatoes.
