Unit 5 - Creation Flashcards
How are catholic beliefs shown in the “creation of Adam” by Michelangelo
- God is presented as an ageing figure with grey hair and a beard whereas Adam is shown to be youthful . This shows that God is eternal and whereas humanity is not
- God and Adam are reaching out for each others hands showing that there is a longing for a close relationship between God and humanity
- Adam is not fully alive and is reliant on God’s touch for life; reflecting that humanity relies on God for life
- God and adam are lying in similar positions ; showing the belief that God made humans in his image
What are the differences between the creation of Adam and the real creation story
- In the creation story God breathes into Adam for life; he does not do it by touch
- In the painting God and Adam are the same size suggesting they are equal . This goes against catholic belief
What catholic beliefs are presented in Meires mosaic
- Lines extend from Gods hand to the end of the mosaic which reflects how Gods created all things and that his power and influence touch all things
- Gods hand is larger than the cloud above it showing the extent of Gods power and above creation
What are the similarities between creation of Adam and the mosaic
- Both the mosaic and the creation of Adam show God as powerful and eternal .
- They also both show him as creator
What are the differences between creation of Adam and mieres mosaic
- Mieres mosaic shows more about the fact that God is creator and is always creating whereas Creation of Adam shows the relationship between God and humanity
- Meires mosaic shows only Gods hand which some people think is a more acceptable way of showing he is infinite whereas Creation of Adam shows God as a human being figure which goes against him being transcendant
How is the nature of God presented through creation
God is presented through creation as
Omnipotent
Transcendent
Creator
How is God presented as omnipotent
God is able to create the universe by just saying words . This shows he is all powerful(omnipotent )
-This should inspire christians to trust in God as they know he can do or change anything
How is God presented as transcendent
God is able to create anything by just saying words ; this shows that he is above human understanding (transcendent) . He is like no other being; this should inspire awe from christians
How is God presented as creator
God creates everything and is the only creator in Genesis
- This is significant for christians as it means they should only worship one God
- It also shows that they should look after everything in the world as it has come from God
How do humans share the spirit of God
In Genesis 2 God breathes into Adam in order to give him life
- The hebrew translation of breath is spirit
- This shows that Humans share the spirit of God
How were humans given the gift of free will
Christians belive in Genesis two humans are given the gift of free will
- God tells Adam that he can eat from any tree but the tree of knowledge in the garden of Eden
- God only tells Adam not to eat from the tree , he does not prevent him from doing so . He gives him free will to make a decision on whether to eat from it or not
How should christians use their free will
Christians should not use their free will to commit sin as this drives them away from God , they should use it in a way to help them live a life that pleases God
How does the creation story inspire christians to be stewards
In Genesis God tells Adam to subdue the earth and that they have dominion over all creatures . This teaches humans that they have been given the power and responsiblity to rule over all creatures and that therefore look after and care for these creatures.
- God also tells Adam to “till and keep “ the garden of eden showing how humans should be good stewards and look after their environment
- The earth is also seen as a gift from God by christians and in return they have to look after it .
What does the creation story tell christians about the dignity of humans
- The creation story describes how God made humans in his image and how they all share in his qualities . This shows how all humans were made equally .
- For catholics this means all people should be treated with dignity and respect
