What are the church’s two main purposes for catholics
For catholics the church provides a space
- To worship together as a community
- To worship individually : this means the chruch should be a quiet , peaceful space that inspires people to worship God
How does the church help and inspire people to worship
- Statues of saints encourage and inspire christians to follow in their example
- Side chapels provide smaller spaces were people can ambark on quiet individual prayer
- Images such as the stations of the cross inspire christians to reflect on Jesus’ suffering
- The care that has been put into designing the church shows the devotion to God and helps people to feel God is respected
How was the church designed before 1965
- The church was built facing Jerusalem before 1965 as this was the city where Jesus died and rose again
- The church was built in a cross shape to remind believers of the cross on which Jesus died
- The altar was against the east wall and the priest used to say the mass in Latin , with his back facing the congregation so the mass wasnt very inclusive
How were churches designed after 1965
- After 1965 chruches were built so that as many people could jpin in with the mass as possible
- The altar is more towards the centre of the church with congregation sat all the way round
What is the lectern? What is its importance?
- The lectern is the reading stand from which bible readings are given
- The old testement readings remind christians of how God has been there for his people since the beggining
- The new testemant readings tell people about the life and actions of Jesus
- The readings are important as Jesus is the word of God made flesh so when bible readings are given out Christ is present
What is the crucifix? Why is it significant?
- The crucifix is an image of the cross with Jesus cricified on it
- The crucifix reminds Christians of Jesus suffering to save humanity
- It inspires love and gratitude for all christ has done for humanity including forgiveness of sins

What is the altar
The altar is the place of sacrifice from whivh the bread and wine are offered to God at mass
Why is the altar significant
- The altar is significant because christ is truly present in the altar , offering himself on behalf of humanity
- At the altar the father strengthens the faith and lives of believers when they recieve the body and blood of christ
What is the tabernacle
-The tabernacle is the place where the consecrated bread is kept after mass
Why is the tabernacle important
- The tabernacle houses the real presence of christ so catholics like to pray in front of it
- The tabernacle inspires a deep sense of peace as it reminds catholics that christ still cares for them
- The host can be taken from the tabernacle and given to people too ill to reach church
What is a crucifix ? What does it do ?
- A crucifix is a cross with A cricified Jesus on it
- It is a reminder of the suffering Christ endured out of his love fpr humanity
- It inspires christians to feel love and gratitude towards christ

A cross is a symbol of a cross without the figure of Jesus on it
- It reminds christians of Jesus’ victory over sin and death. Jesus is not on the cross as he has ressurected
- It empahsises Jesus’ ressurection and how christians should be people of new life
What is a risen christ statue ?Why is it important ?
- A risen christ statue focusses on the risen,glorified saviour
- It reminds catholics that in holy communion they recieve the body,blood soul and divinity of the new risen christ
- It emphasises the ressurections importance
Why did God gove humans free will
- God made all of creation perfect
- God also gave humans free will
-God gave humans free will as he wanted them to activley choose him rather than choose him because they couldnt do anything else
What can Humans use their free will to do
- Humans can use their free will to sin
- A sin is an action or thought that goes against God’s will
What is orignial sin
Original sin is the inbuilt tendency ,that the catholic chruch teaches all humanshave ,to commit sin
What has sin done
- Sin has broken down the relationship between God,humanity and the whole of creation
- The word of God became Jesus to restore the broken relationship between humanity ,the whole of creation and God
What is the importance of Jesus death and burial
- Jesus showed total obedience to Gods will through his death
- Jesus showed continual love even when he was suffering ( he forgave the executioners)
- Jesus showed God is with people in death
- Through Jesus death he restored the relationship between God and humanity
What is the significance of the ascension
- 40 days after his ressurcetion Jesus rose up to heaven, showing he is with the father
- Christians also believe they will rise to heaven
What is the importance of the ressurection
- All four gospels say that Jesus rose from the dead-It is believed to have actually happened
- Now jesus has risen from the dead life after death with God is believed to be possible(Jesus promised his followers would follow where he went). The power of Sin and death can be overcome
- All good people that died before Jesus rose to heaven with Jesus
What did Jesus do through the 4 steps of redemption
Through the four steps of redemption Jesus restored the cosimic order. He made creation perfect again after it had been broken by Adam and Eve
What is an important quote for ressurection
-“If christ has not been raised your faith is futile and you are in your sins “ ~St paul
How has salvation happened in the past
-Jesus’ death and ressurection defeated the power of Sin and death and made it possible for humans to eneter heaven
How is salvation happening in the present
- Sins exist because people have to choose to accept or reject salvation through following Jesus’ teachings - salvation is an ongoing process
- The holy spirit is continually guiding people towards salvation
