Unit 5 Cell Division Flashcards
Why are cells small (surface area)
Cells are small because the larger the cell gets becomes the harder it is for the cell membrane to get enough materials to maintain the cell.
What happens during interphase
Interphase, where the cell spends most of its life and grows, duplicates DNA.
What happens during prophase
Prophase chromosomes condense and form into chromatids connected by a centromere.
What happens during Metaphase
Metaphase chromatids line up in the center of the cell and attach to the spindle fibers.
What happens during anaphase
During Anaphase chromatids are pulled to the opposite poles of the cell and the cell stretches.
What happens during telophase
Chromosomes uncondense and new nuclei form
What happens during Cytokinesis
The cell membrane pinches itself down the center creating two genetically identical daughter cells.
What is the difference between sister chromatids and homologous chromosomes
Sister chromatids are copies of a single replicated chromosome. Homologous chromosomes are chromosomes that are identical in genetic information.
What cells divide regularly
Skin Cells
What cells divide when injured
Internal Organs
What cells never divide
Nerve cells, cardiac muscle
How is cell division different in plants
In plant cell the addition of a cells wall requires they make a new cell plate growing out from the center of the cell to divide from.
How is cell division different in prokaryotes (no nucleus)
The cell divides as the cell membrane grows
What is cancer
Cancer is uncontrolled cell division
What does benign mean
Benign is relates to cancer growth that doesn’t spread to other parts of the body
